As a Software testing professional I’ve come across some hideous user interfaces. Some look as if the developer has thrown some buttons in a hat mixed them up and then thrown them at the screen. Usability is a subject that I’ve always been interested in. If the system is not intuitive in its display then regardless of how it may change my life I probably won’t use it.
Previously not much emphasis was given to how the user would use and navigate a system. Of course as a software tester you have some views however as budgets get tighter throughout projects the deliverable is key to success not the quality of the deliverable.

Nowadays I see more focus on Usability. I also notice that software testers are now incorporating usability into their testing. But I ask how many people know what they are actually testing for?

So how is usability defined?

Usability is a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use. The word “usability” also refers to methods for improving ease-of-use during the design process.

Usability is defined by 5 quality components:

1.Learnability: How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter the design?
2.Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform tasks?
3.Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how easily can they reestablish proficiency?
4.Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors?
5.Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

The below are some definition variants

The state or condition of being usable; The degree to which an object, device, software application, etc. is easy to use with no specific training – Wiktionary

Usability refers to the ease with which a User Interface can be used by its intended audience to achieve defined goals. Usability incorporates many factors: design, functionality, structure, information architecture, and more – Sitepoint

1. Learnability

How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter the design?

2.Efficiency

Efficiency relates to how fast a user accomplish tasks once he or she has learned to use a system. The basic idea behind it is that, as you use a computer system more and more, your level of expertise in use of that system increases, thus lowering the amount of time that it took you to do a particular task. A good example of this is in the concept of shortcuts or quick keys. For example, many people use CTRL-X to cut a piece of text on a PC (alternatively, Mac users use Apple-X) and use CTRL-V to paste text (or Apple-V on the Mac). This is a very basic concept that allows people to be more efficient: Without this, a user would have to highlight the text with their mouse, then go to the edit menu, pick the cut item in the menu, then go to the place where the text is to be pasted, go back to the edit menu and click on the paste item in the menu. Using the quick keys, they highlight the text they want to cut, press CTRL-X, go where they want to paste the text and press CTRL-V. In this process, two extra time-consuming tasks have been removed. While it may not seem like much, if you consider the number of times a user might use those function in a given day, it adds up to quite a large amount of time.

3.Memorability

The concept of memorability, within the usability context, is that a user can leave a program and, when he or she returns to it, remember how to do things in it. How many times have we all gone through a training exercise with someone who knew the system only to come back to it and be completely confused? This is the issue that memorability tries to address.

4.Errors

How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors? To me a bad or misleading error message is like having a window into the quality of the system and I typically judge the company by this.

5.Satisfaction

How pleasant is it to use the design?

The System Usability Scale

The SUS is a 10 item questionnaire with 5 response options.

I think that I would like to use this system frequently.

I found the system unnecessarily complex.

I thought the system was easy to use.

I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this system.

I found the various functions in this system were well integrated.

I thought there was too much inconsistency in this system.

I would imagine that most people would learn to use this system very quickly.

I found the system very cumbersome to use.

I felt very confident using the system.

I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this system.
